Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is an organic molecule that is required for a wide range of absolutely necessary and fundamental metabolic reactions in ALL animals and plants in order for them to live. Almost all organisms are able to produce this essential molecule for life, including all plants and animals, with the exception of bats, guinea pigs, capybaras and Haplorrhni (primate suborder) as well as a few species of birds and fish.
The reason that these animals do not produce ascorbic acid is that their natural, instinctual diets include an abundance of fruit and vegetables that provide them with enough hence there is no need to produce it. This is not going to be a chemistry lesson but it is useful to see the actual structure of this essential molecule.
